Saree Care Guide: Washing, Storing and Folding

By My Tassels by Abi Silks ·

Good care is what keeps a saree soft and bright. These habits are simple and cost almost nothing.

Washing

  • Always check the care label or the product page first.
  • Silk and heavy zari sarees are best dry cleaned.
  • For lighter cotton and daily-wear sarees, wash gently by hand in cold water with a mild liquid detergent, without wringing or scrubbing.
  • Wash dark colours separately the first time.

Drying

Dry in shade, never in strong sun, which fades colour and weakens fibres. Turn the saree inside out while drying.

Storing

  • Wrap each silk saree in a soft cotton or muslin cloth instead of plastic, so the fabric can breathe.
  • Keep a few neem leaves or a natural moth repellent in the cupboard.
  • Air your sarees in a shaded, ventilated spot every few months.

Folding

Re-fold your sarees along different lines every few months. Repeated folds on the same line can wear the fabric, and zari is especially prone to this.

After wearing

Let the saree air for some hours before putting it back, and wipe any perfume or sweat marks promptly.
