How to Choose a Silk Saree: A Simple Buyer's Guide
A silk saree is one of the few things you will wear for years and pass on. A few minutes spent understanding what you are buying makes a big difference to how happy you are with it later.
1. Start with the occasion
Weddings and big festivals suit rich, heavier weaves with a broad border and visible zari. For office, family functions and everyday festive wear, a lighter silk or semi silk drapes more easily and is less tiring to wear for a full day.
2. Look at the weave and the weight
Hold the fabric if you can: a good silk feels smooth, has a soft fall and does not feel stiff or scratchy. Heavier sarees look grand but need more care and a confident drape. Lighter ones are easier to carry and travel with.
3. Check the border and pallu
The border and pallu carry most of the design. Look for even, clean woven patterns, a neat finish at the edges and a pallu that matches the body of the saree without gaps or loose threads.
4. Choose colour for your skin tone and your wardrobe
Warm tones such as maroon, mustard and bottle green suit most skin tones. If you already own many bright sarees, a deep neutral such as navy, black or ivory gives you an easy pairing with different blouses.
5. Read the product page properly
Photos and screens never match a fabric perfectly, so read the description for fabric, length, blouse piece and care instructions. If anything is unclear, message the store and ask for a live video call to see the saree before you buy.
